How do I apply for a degree program?

We're delighted that you'd like to apply for a degree program at Ulm University of Applied Sciences!

Some of our degree programs are subject to limited-admission – there is a selection procedure because there are more applicants than study places. We also offer degree programs where there is no limit on the number of study places available. You are sure of a place on one of these as long as you have a valid higher education entrance qualification.

Applying for a Bachelor's degree program with a German higher education entrance qualification (for degree program with NC)

We're delighted that you'd like to apply for a degree program at THU - Ulm University of Applied Sciences! Some of our degree programs are subject to limited-admission – there is a selection procedure because there are more applicants than study places. We also offer degree programs where there is no limit on the number of study places available. You are sure of a place on one of these as long as you have a valid higher education entrance qualification.

Application for NC-free degree programs​

​NC-free dgree programs are:

  • Digital Production
  • Data Science in Medicine (winter semester only)​

Application:

Step 1: Enroll directly in the THU application portal.

Please note: If you do not see a calculation of tuition fees in the "Fees" tab during enrollment, please upload a blank document as proof of fees. Only after submitting the enrollment application, you will be able to view all necessary payment information in the "Fees" tab and make the appropriate payment. Afterwards, please replace the blank document in the "Documents" tab with a real proof of payment.




Application for Physiotherapy

We are currently working on a new application process for the Physiotherapy degree program.

Please check this page again at the end of March.

Application Digital Media

The application process at Digital Media is preceded by an eligibility assessment process (EFV). (in German)

If you have successfully participated in this, follow the steps in the application process for Bachelor programs above.

​Digital Media is only offered in the winter semester.




Applying for the dual study program

We're delighted that you'd like to apply for a dual study program at THU - Ulm University of Applied Sciences! A special contract with a company is required for both dual study options – the Ulm Model (degree + apprenticeship) or studying with in-depth practical experience (degree only). For the "Study program with in-depth practical experience", please follow the Bachelor's application route when applying to the THU.

 The application procedure for the Ulm Model study program is as follows:

Step 1: Partner company

  • Apply to the partner company with your most recent qualification certificate (at least one year before the start of the course)
  • Application to THU: send your employment contract, certificates and curriculum vitae to dual@thu.de
Step 2: Admission and enrollment
  • Have you received a Notification of Admission? Your Notification of Admission letter will show you the next steps you must take to enroll successfully.

Master's application

Our degree programs are subject to limited-admission – there is a selection procedure because there are more applicants than study places. Step 1: Additional documentary evidence required if you have a foreign Bachelor's qualification

  • If you are a foreign citizen: make sure you apply in good time to have your Bachelor's qualification recognized by the Studienkolleg Konstanz 
  • If you are a German citizen: make sure you apply in good time to have your Bachelor's qualification recognized by the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart 
  • If you are a Chinese citizen: first of all, you need the APS certificate. Then you can apply to get your certificate recognized by the Studienkolleg Konstanz. Find more detailed information in the FAQs – "I come from abroad. What do I need to take into consideration?
  • Certificate of language proficiency

Applying with a foreign higher education entrance qualification

We're delighted that you want to apply for a degree program at our University of Applied Sciences! We hope the following overview will help you to study your desired degree program at our university. Good luck, we look forward to meeting you!
If you want to apply for a Master's and you have a foreign Bachelor's qualification, you'll find all the important information under the "Master's application" tab.

Step 1: Additional documentary evidence required
  • If you are a foreign citizen: make sure you apply in good time to have your higher education entrance qualification recognized by the Studienkolleg Konstanz
  • If you are a German citizen: make sure you apply in good time to have your higher education entrance qualification recognized by the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart
  • Certificate of language proficiency (TestDaF 4,0; DSH-2; DSH-3; telc Deutsch C1 oder Goethe-Zertifikat C2)​

Then follow the steps of the regular bachelor's application above.

​Joining the program in a higher semester (only Bachelor)

Step 1: Take a good look at the course and examination regulations and decide which semester you would like to apply for
Step 2: Set up an interview with our student adviser
Step 3: Submit your application via the THU application portal 

  • In the application portal, select "Bachelor höheres Semester" (Bachelor higher semester) and then enter the semester which you would like to apply for
  • PLEASE NOTE: You may only apply for one degree program in a higher semester!

Step 4: You will receive an e-mail from THU with your next steps. Recognition of existing academic credits will occur after enrollment.

Please note:​

  1. Make sure you apply in good time if there is a risk of exclusion due to a second attempt. We cannot accept applications after the deadline has expired.
  2. In order for joining in a higher semester to work, you should have acquired most of the ECTS credits for your desired semester already. However, you will need to discuss with your program adviser which specific academic credits will be recognized.​


There is no Clearing process for applications to join a higher semester. This does not affect your option to have your previously-acquired competence recognized after enrollment and subsequently getting a place in a higher semester.

​Applications for those with vocational qualifications

  • Step 1: Successful completion of vocational training
  • Step 2: Successful completion of higher-level vocational training (e.g. Master Craftsman)
  • Step 3: Arrange a consultation interview with THU (e-mail to studienberatung@thu.de)
  • Step 4: Apply using the regular Bachelor's application route, uploading your additional documentation (qualification certificates + evidence of the interview with THU)

Required documentation for the Bachelor's application

  • Higher education entrance qualification(e.g. Abitur)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Course orientation test (e.g. via Was-studiere-ich)
  • Any additional certificates (e.g. vocational training qualifications)

Applicants with a foreign higher education entrance qualification must submit additional documentary evidence. Find more information under "Applying with a foreign higher education entrance qualification".

Enrollment

Limited-admission (NC) degree program:
If you are admitted to a limited-admission degree program at Ulm University of Applied Sciences, you will receive an admission offer on the hochschulstart.de platform, which you need to actively accept there. Then you will receive a Notification of Admission letter with all the important information about enrollment. Please read the information carefully and adhere to the specified enrollment period.

Then log in to the application portal again, using your access data. You can also do the enrollment here by clicking on the icon for your application. Important: don't forget to send off your application!

"NC-free" degree program with unlimited places:
For "NC-free" degree programs with unlimited places, you need to enroll directly in the THU application portal. You can find out more under the tab "Applying for 'NC-free' degree programs with unlimited places".

You can see the status of your enrollment in the application portal. If the status is "gültig" (valid) then you just need to wait. Then you'll either receive an e-mail or a letter by post with all the important information about starting your studies​.​
