Means of transport

​Whether you are exploring the city, going to university or planning a weekend trip, Ulm offers numerous ways to get to your destination in comfort.

Bus and Tram

Ulm and Neu-Ulm have a well-developed public transport system, which is operated by Stadtwerke Ulm (SWU). The DING fare network covers the region up to 50 km into the surrounding area. The tariffs are based on honeycombs, with Ulm and Neu-Ulm forming a joint tariff zone.

Night buses run on the nights before Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays.

Tickets
  • D-Ticket JugendBW: For students under the age of 27, available as an annual subscription for € 473 (as of February 2025) and valid throughout Germany on local and regional transport.
  • Deutschlandticket: Valid for € 58 per month (as of February 2025) on all local and regional transport in Germany, can be canceled monthly.
  • One-way ticket: Valid for one zone within the city area or a neighboring zone.
  • Day ticket: All-day ticket for one person or for groups (5 persons) at weekends and on public holidays.
  • Weekly and monthly tickets: Transferable and valid until the first working day of the following month.

Tickets must be purchased before the journey, either from the bus driver or from ticket machines. A fine of up to € 60 (as of February 2025) may be charged for a missing ticket.

German Railways

Ulm is an important hub in the German rail network with regular connections by long-distance trains (ICE, IC, EC) and regional trains (IRE, RE, RB, S). These offer good connections within Germany and abroad.

You can obtain timetable information and tickets via the Deutsche Bahn webs​ite or app (DB Navigator) as well as from ticket machines and in travel centers at larger stations. Special offers and discounts such as the Deutschlandticket, BahnCard or saver fares are also available.

In the event of delays of more than 60 minutes within the EU, you can claim back part of the fare. If an overnight stay is necessary, Deutsche Bahn will bear the costs. If you are traveling with Deutsche Bahn, you can find out about your passenger rights directly on their website​.

Other means of transport

Bicycle

The cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm can be easily explored by bicycle. You can take your bike on buses and streetcars free of charge: before 06:00 and after 09:00 until the end of service from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, bicycles can be carried free of charge all day. Please note that wheelchairs, baby carriages, etc. have priority over bicycles. have priority over bicycles. Long-distance buses

Travel cheaply by bus? No problem. The number of long-distance c​oach providers in Germany and their network of connections has been growing for several years. This has made them an interesting alternative to De​utsche Bahn. Despite the generally longer journey times, long-distance bus companies offer lower prices for connections both within Germany and abroad.
