Whether you are exploring the city, going to university, or planning a weekend trip, Ulm offers numerous ways to get to your destination in comfort.

Bus and tram

Ulm and Neu-Ulm have a well-developed public transport system, operated by Stadtwerke Ulm (SWU). The DING fare network extends 50 km into the surrounding region. The tariffs are based on honeycombs, with Ulm and Neu-Ulm forming a joint tariff zone.

Night buses run on the nights before Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays.

German Railways (Deutsche Bahn)

Ulm is an important hub in the German rail network. Frequent long-distance trains (ICE, IC, EC) and regional trains (IRE, RE, RB, S) offer excellent connections within Germany and abroad.

You can get timetable information and tickets from the Deutsche Bahn webs ite or app (DB Navigator), as well as from ticket machines and at travel centers in larger stations. Special offers and discounts such as the Deutschlandticket, BahnCard, or saver fares are also available.

If you are delayed for more than 60 minutes within the EU, you can claim back part of the fare. If an overnight stay is necessary, Deutsche Bahn will bear the costs. If you are traveling with Deutsche Bahn, you can find out about your passenger rights directly from their website.

Other modes of transport

Bicycle

Ulm and Neu-Ulm are easily explored by bicycle. You can take your bike on buses and trams free of charge – before 6 am and after 9 am from Monday to Friday, and all day on weekends and public holidays. Please note that wheelchairs, baby strollers, etc. have priority over bicycles. Ultimately, the bus or tram driver has the final say on whether you are allowed to take your bicycle with you.

Carpooling

Carpooling is when you transport passengers in your own car, and all passengers share the journey costs:

Long-distance buses

Travel cheaply by bus? No problem. In Germany, the number of long-distance bus companies and their networks have grown significantly in recent years. This has made them an interesting alternative to De utsche Bahn. Despite the longer journey times, long-distance bus companies offer lower prices for connections both within Germany and abroad.
