The academic year is divided into two semesters:

- Summer semester: March 1 to August 31 (lectures from mid-March to the end of July)
Study credits
The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)
If you are studying abroad as an exchange student and would like to have your academic achievements recognized, it is important to be familiar with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
The ECTS is the European system for the recognition of internationally comparable academic achievements. It enables the transfer of ECTS points between European universities. Each course, internship or thesis is awarded points that reflect the workload. In addition, there are key qualification points (ASQ), which help students to acquire interdisciplinary skills.
Subdivision of the courses
- V - Lecture: mass event with lecture
- Ü - Exercise: practical application of the material
- S - Seminar: course with active student participation
- L - Laboratory: practical application of the material learned
In addition, you will usually complete one or more internships during your full-time studies in Ulm. During an internship, you can gain work experience for several weeks or months in an area related to your field of study.
Your performance is assessed using the grading system commonly used at German universities:
- Grade 1.0 to 1.5: very good
- Grade 1.6 to 2.5: good
- Grade 2.6 to 3.5: satisfactory
- Grade 3.6 to 4.0: sufficient
- Grade 4.1 to 5.0: insufficient
Credits are not grades. Credits indicate how much time must be invested in a course. Grades provide information about the quality of the coursework completed. You only receive credits for courses you have passed (grade 4.0 or better).

Buddy and mentoring program
The International Office offers a buddy program for all international students. The Buddy Program is aimed at exchange students who come from a partner university and are only studying at THU for one or two semesters.
A buddy is a THU student who supports you for a semester and helps you, for example, with filling out forms or finding your way around the university and the city. Buddies can also give you tips on how to spend your free time and plan joint activities and excursions. The advantages of this are the exchange of culture, language and experiences abroad.
Registration for the Buddy Program for exchange students
The International Office will send you an e-mail with the registration form.
