Engineering products and processes are becoming increasingly complex. Making these manageable and realisable is the task of systems engineering.Here, systems-thinking is becoming increasingly important.Customer requirements must be documented early on, development processes defined and design procedures structured in every detail, right up to the handover of the finished product – without losing sight of the overall concept.

The degree programme Systems Engineering and Management will give you the specialist knowledge you need to handle these tasks successfully in industry. The course is offered in four variants with different specialisation subjects for this reason.The three-semester Master's degree programme is the result of cooperation between multiple departments at Ulm University of Applied Sciences, with the goal of providing an attractive further qualification for Bachelor graduates of engineering degrees, who are aiming for a future role in management.

With the specialisation topic “Logistics” (SYL), you will acquire the engineering science knowledge you need about technical logistics systems, computer-supported planning, control and simulation of logistics systems, as well as energy efficiency in production and logistics.In addition, you will also acquire economics knowledge – particularly in controlling, cost calculation, management and staff leadership.

To apply for the Master’s degree programme SYL you need an above-average qualification in a technically-oriented degree from a German university or a comparable foreign university – with a standard study period of at least three years and course content corresponding to at least 180 ECTS credit points.Furthermore, you should have sound knowledge and skills: equivalent to that obtainable at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences in the Bachelor's degree programmes Industrial Engineering or Industrial Engineering/Logistics.Other prerequisites are a good knowledge of German and English, as well as successful participation in a selection interview.

If you are not able to provide complete evidence of the knowledge and skills stated above before starting your studies on the Master's degree programme, but (due to the quality of your first degree and the result of the selection interview) it is to be expected that you will be able to complete the degree programme successfully, you may be admitted: on the condition that you acquire the missing knowledge within one semester.

Course schedule

The course has a modular structure.The standard study period of the full-time course is three semesters.The course plan is structured into four subject groups, the contents of which are aligned with the latest findings from the logistics and production management sectors.The course plan comprises advanced engineering knowledge in important future-oriented topics, broadened by the economics subjects necessary for managerial tasks.

The subject group “Mathematical/Scientific Fundamentals” will teach you the applied mathematics you need to know for planning, designing and managing logistics systems.In the subject group “Systems Engineering”, you will study engineering science in greater depth over four modules: building on previous knowledge from the Bachelor’s degree programmes, but now from the perspective of complex systems and introducing you to the latest developments in scientific knowledge.The subject group “Management” will teach you the commercial skills you need for successful operational management in the logistics sector.Here three compulsory modules and one alternative module must be completed.In the subject group “Scientific Working” you will conclude your course with a project and a Master’s Thesis.After successful completion of the degree programme, you will be awarded the academic degree title “Master of Engineering”.

Completion of the Master’s degree programme Systems Engineering and Management – Logistics will qualify you for challenging managerial roles in procurement and production logistics or in supply chain management, as a project, group or department leader.As a graduate of this specialisation, you will take on tasks in planning, constructing, operating and managing complex logistics systems.As well as qualifying you directly for a career, completion of the Master’s degree programme also entitles you to enter the civil service on the “höheren Dienst” career path and enables you to do a doctoral degree.​
