When you start your studies, you often have lots of questions: Where do I need to go? Who is responsible for what? And what do I absolutely need to know? The following information is here to help you get off to a smooth start with your studies. For any technical issues relating to your university account, your email, Wi-Fi or the THU Card, the THU’s Information and Media Centre (IMZ) is here to help.

University Account The services provided by the Information and Media Center (IMZ) are available to all members and affiliates of Ulm University of Technology. Every student at Ulm University of Technology receives their own access credentials (university account) and a university email account. The account is used for authentication to access IT services on campus or off-campus.
Email Every student at Ulm University of Applied Sciences receives their own university email account. To ensure you don’t miss any important information, you should check your inbox regularly. Automatic forwarding to a private email address is not permitted. You can access your mailbox at www.thu.de/mail using your UserPrincipalName and password.
Wi-Fi – eduroam Ulm University of Technology participates in the eduroam project. To access eduroam, THU uses the secure and easy-to-use easyroam service provided by the DFN. To set it up, you’ll need your THU network login credentials. You can find detailed information and instructions on setting up eduroam via easyroam here.

THU-Card / Student ID card

Your student ID card will be with you from your first day to your last at THU. The THU-Card is designed to make your daily life as a student easier: it serves as your student ID, library card, and Student Services payment card all in one. You will receive your THU-Card and your university account by mail the week before the orientation course.

  • Cashless payments: With your student ID, you can conveniently make cashless payments in the dining hall, the cafeteria, and at all vending machines.
  • Printing, scanning & copying: Easy and convenientwith the THU-Card.
  • Parking: As a student, you have the option to park for freeat both campuses of the Technical University of Ulm.
  • Voting: Your THU-Card serves as your voter IDfor student elections.
  • Library access: All campuses of the University of Ulm are equipped with a library. With your THU-Card, you can borrow specialized books in the fields of computer science and engineering, as well as academic journals, newspapers, and data storage media.

If you want to access internal services from outside the university, use the Cisco Secure Client. This establishes a secure data tunnel through the university’s firewall. The “virtual private network” (VPN) is used to connect users of one private network to another private network. Currently, VPN connections are blocked from the following countries: China, India, the Netherlands, North Korea, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vietnam.

Installation

  1. Download the Cisco Secure Client from the following link: https://vpn.thu.de​.

  2. Log in with your university credentials. For VPN login, please use the Universal Principal Name (UPN) following the standard 4+2+2 format: for Max Mustermann, this would be "mustma01(at)thu.de".

  3. You’ll need administrator privileges to install it.
  4. Several help documents are available online.
  5. If the connection isn’t established automatically, please enter the following server before clicking “Connect”: vpn.thu.de.

If you encounter problems

  • Do you have administrator rights on your device?
  • An installed firewall, antivirus program, or security tool may be blocking the connection
  • Windows: The “Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)” and “Routing and RAS” services must not be running.
  • Make sure cookies are enabled for vpn.thu.de.
  • If necessary, add vpn.thu.de to your list of trusted websites.

iOS & Android

  • Install the Cisco Secure Client from the App Store or Google Play Store
  • Enter the following as the server for the connection: vpn.thu.de

E-learning is intended to provide everyone with the possibilities of modern communication media in order to make teaching and learning at the university as effective and efficient as possible. In e-learning you will find all the courses in your degree program as well as other features such as evaluations and the like. You can obtain all the information you need from the Institute for University Didactics (IHD).

Ulm University of Applied Sciences participates in the eduroam project. With eduroam (education roaming), you can use free Wi-Fi not only on campus, but also at many universities worldwide - without the need for a separate guest account. All you need to use it is your THU account.

Access is via the easyroam system provided by DFN, which enables secure and uncomplicated setup. You will need your THU network access data to set it up.

Office 365

For THU students, Office 365—including Teams and OneDrive storage—is free to use. You can also download the M365 apps at no cost. For information about Office 365 and access to Microsoft cloud services, visit office.com. You log in using your User Principal Name (UPN). You can find your UPN at https://www.thu.de/account.

MATLAB TAH Campus License

Ulm University of Applied Sciences has entered into a “TAH Campus” license agreement with MathWorks. The Total Academic Headcount license includes MATLAB and Simulink as well as numerous extension toolboxes. You can download a personal standalone copy of the software for any computer on which you are the sole user. Free online courses are also offered through the MATLAB portal. LabVIEW Student Install Open

This allows you to use the same software on your own computer as you would at the university. To activate the software, each student must set up a user profile with National Instruments. The serial number for the Student Option can be obtained from the system administrators in the respective departments.
