Open access to scientific knowledge is regarded as a key prerequisite for universities to fulfil their research and educational remit in the modern world. THU expressly supports the open access approach, whilst at the same time respecting authors’ freedom to choose their publication route. Through the joint OPARU system with the University of Ulm, various forms of publication, including primary and secondary publications, dissertations and research data, can be made available.
In the course of digitalization and the associated networking at national and international level, publications in Open Access represent the consistent further development of scientific working methods. They intensify, promote and secure the fundamental innovation and competitiveness of a university in a supra-regional context. THU expressly supports the open access approach and at the same time respects the principle of free choice of publication channels for authors, which is protected by academic freedom.
In line with the guiding principle of Open Access, the THU welcomes the free availability of research results produced by the THU community, thereby making them visible both internally and externally. The university administration supports all members of the university community in achieving this goal, particularly by establishing the necessary financial and structural conditions.
To promote the establishment of a repository for Open Access publications at the THU, authors should ensure that usage rights are preserved when publishing in restricted-access journal publications. The assignment of exclusive rights of use should be avoided. Instead, a simple right of use for public access should be granted.
Attention is drawn to compliance with data and copyright protection and the rules of good scientific practice.
THU uses the open access publication system OPARU together with the University of Ulm and offers it to all university members.
The following publications can be made via this system:
Details on publishing are listed on the intranet.
THU supports the "green road" when publishing. This involves the additional publication of a publication published by a publisher or journal on an institutional or disciplinary repository, e.g. on the repository of the university library. This can take place at the same time as or after publication by the publisher. As a rule, this is the preprint or postprint of a scientific article, but the publication of other types of documents, such as research reports, monographs or working papers, is also possible.
