Sustainable university

At Ulm University of Technology (THU), sustainability is not a one-off project, but a central component of the university’s strategy, shaping every aspect of our work. From energy-efficient infrastructure and responsible procurement to teaching, research and social engagement, THU takes a holistic approach.

Our aim is to empower students to develop sustainable solutions. At the same time, as an institution, we make an active contribution to a sustainable and just society.

New building at the Albert-Einstein-Allee site

The new THU building on Albert-Einstein-Allee, which has been in operation since summer 2021, was designed as a highly efficient structure. It meets the “Efficiency House Plus” energy standard: by utilizing renewable energy sources, the building generates more energy than it consumes.

An innovative overall energy concept is created through the intelligent integration of energy flows with the adjacent existing building. For its sustainable construction, the building was awarded the “Silver” certificate for sustainable building by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development, and Construction.

E-mobility

Ulm University of Applied Sciences relies on electric vehicles not only for the relevant degree courses, but also for employee mobility. In addition to an e-Golf, which is mainly used for errands and post, but also for business trips by the Rectorate, pedelecs are available to all employees at both locations, which can be used for business trips within Ulm or for trips between the locations.

Fairtrade University

THU has been a Fairtrade University since 2019. Fairtrade Germany has already confirmed and extended this award three times. We are committed to fair and sustainable trade and use certified products, for example at events or in sales via our Fair-O-Mat. Together with partners such as Engineers Without Borders, we actively promote the idea of fair trade.

Additional Environment+ qualifications for students

Climate protection concept

THU is actively working to reduce its emissions and become climate-neutral in the long term. The Climate Protection Plan outlines the current status, key challenges, and specific measures.

Climate Protection Plan

As part of a third-party funded project, the position of Climate Protection Manager is also being filled. The goal is to develop concrete measures for greater climate protection and to embed them in university operations over the long term. The new plan will replace the existing Climate Protection Plan and is expected to be completed within the next year.
