As a state-recognised university of applied sciences and a body governed by public law, Ulm University of Applied Sciences holds charitable status.
It is therefore authorised to issue donation receipts for donations and endowments. These donations and endowments may be paid directly into the THU’s account, with or without a specific purpose, or made via funding agreements.

The legislator distinguishes between the following terms in accordance with AnO Sponsoring [GABl2019-4-126]:
are voluntary contributions in cash or in kind without consideration. They can be provided with a specific purpose by the donor. It is imperative to avoid any influence by the donor on the completion of tasks or any corresponding impression. Acceptance of donations requires the prior approval of the university management.
Donation receipts may be issued by THU in accordance with the provisions of §10b EStG for tax-privileged purposes (i.e. in particular not for catering services).
is a donation of money, goods or services that pursues other interests in addition to the motive of promoting the public institution. For example, the sponsor is interested in "profiling" itself in public via the sponsored "product" (e.g. advertising, positive public image). In the case of sponsorship, the service and consideration must be contractually agreed (see AnO Sponsoring GABl2019-4-126). Sponsorship services can be active (e.g. advertising for the sponsor) but also passive (e.g. tolerating a positive external image).
No donation receipts may be issued for sponsoring measures in accordance with Section 10b EStG.
Sponsoring and donations must be reported to the state parliament in the biennial report and are published by the state as part of the report. The report can be anonymized at the request of the donor and is made centrally by the Finance Department.

Together with the Ulm Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the benefactors, a five-year professorship entitled "Artificial Intelligence in Production" was successfully established in 2024 and filled by Professor Dr. Michel Börner.
