Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) - In depth practical training, The Ulm Model

Work-study programme in medical technology

The dual degree programme in Medical Technology at Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU) combines technical fundamentals with medical knowledge and practical experience within a company. If you’d like to help develop innovative solutions for healthcare and medicine, this programme offers you the opportunity to combine theory and practice right from the start.

During the work placements, you will work directly within medical technology companies, assisting with the development of medical devices and systems. You will carry out measurements and tests or help to optimise technical processes and products.

The Medical Technology degree programme can be completed as a dual study programme based on the Ulm Model or with an in-depth practical component. The Ulm model also offers you recognised vocational training, for example as an industrial mechanic, mechatronics technician, electronics technician or orthopaedic technician.

Procedure

Medical technology - Ulm model

The dual degree program in medical technology based on the Ulm Model at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences begins every year on September 1 and lasts a total of 4.5 years (9 semesters).

You’ll spend the first half-year at a company, where you’ll begin your apprenticeship—for example, as an orthopedic technician. This is followed by a two-semester foundational program that is closely related to the mechatronics degree program. You then spend a year at the company, complete your apprenticeship, and gain valuable practical experience.

As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate. You’ll collaborate on projects in specialized departments and write your bachelor’s thesis at your partner company during your final semester.

Medical technology - in-depth practice

You can start the dual degree program with an in-depth practical focus on medical technology in either the winter or summer semester. If you’ve already signed your contract before the start of the program, you’ll first get to know your company during a brief orientation period of two to four weeks. Afterward, your studies begin immediately at the university with the first lectures.

As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate: During lecture and exam periods, you’ll study at THU; during breaks from classes, you’ll gain valuable practical experience at the company. The foundational phase, which covers the first two semesters, is closely related to the Mechatronics program and, in keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of medical technology, is broadly structured. The advanced phase consists of additional required and elective modules (including those in the fields of economics, social sciences, and languages); in addition to a comprehensive development project, the practical study semesters, and the bachelor’s thesis, which you complete directly at your partner company. You will also choose one of the four specialization tracks offered, from which you will take six of the assigned core modules.
