Employees with disabilities
The Disability Officer at Ulm University of Applied Sciences is responsible for employees with disabilities. This office is held by Franz Roth. He can be contacted at Franz.Roth(at)thu.de or 0731-96537572. He is a specialist for occupational safety, a representative for severely disabled employees and a fire safety representative.
The task of the representative for severely disabled employees is to

  • to promote the participation of people with severe disabilities in working life and to provide them with help and advice.
  • To offer opportunities for discussion, to intervene in the event of difficulties and to represent the interests of people with severe disabilities and their equals in measures planned by the university.

To make this possible, representatives for severely disabled employees get to know people with severe disabilities and their workplaces. This enables them to recognize potential problems at an early stage and keep an eye on challenges.

Compatibility of career and family

Ulm University of Applied Sciences has been awarded the title of "family-conscious company". The following offers are currently available for families:

As part of the work-life balance, Ulm University of Applied Sciences is committed to offering employees the opportunity to work from home. After consultation with the responsible persons, you can choose the most flexible weekly model for you.

To help you better assess your financial situation when returning to work, there is a return-to-work calculator from the Federal Ministry.

There are family rooms at both THU campuses. These are rooms to which students with children can retreat if, for example, they have not found childcare on a particular day. All rooms have desks and child-friendly equipment. There is also a PC in Prittwitzstraße.

You will find the family rooms

  • in the Albert-Einstein-Allee: Q211
  • in Prittwitzstraße: F011

Employees can have the family rooms unlocked. All you have to do is contact Technical Services.

You can also borrow the keys from the respective libraries during their opening hours. The terms of use of the Library of Things apply. The rules of use for the family rooms (internal document) can be accessed via the intranet.

The legal regulations of the Maternity Protection Act apply to employees. You must officially inform Ulm University of Applied Sciences of your pregnancy. You can find information on this on the intranet at Maternity protection and parental leave (internal document).

You can find the THU guidelines on this at Maternity protection and parental leave(internal document). Further general information on parental leave can be found on the Family portal of the federal government.

The Equal Opportunities team will be happy to advise you on parental leave and reconciling work and family life. Simply contact us at gleichstellung(at)thu.de.

You work at THU and have become a parent? We send our baby package home as a surprise to mothers who have reported the birth of a child to THU. If you do not notify us of a birth (for example, because you have become a father), you will also receive a package - but you will need to write to us by e-mail at gleichstellungsteam(at)thu.de.

Ulm University offers a vacation program for children of school age and above, for which THU employees and students can register their children for the Whitsun and summer vacations. You can find all the information on this page of Ulm University.

In cooperation with Ulm University Hospital, employees of Ulm University of Applied Sciences have the opportunity to receive counseling in stressful situations. Further information and contacts can be found under Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy | Ulm University Hospital. Counseling is free of charge and conversations are subject to confidentiality.

Information on the relevance of gender and diversity in research, including in the engineering sciences, is provided by the German Research Foundation (DFG). A checklist for applicants can also be found there. It is also worth using this as a guide for applications to other funding bodies.

Discrimination, sexual harassment and violence

Ulm University of Applied Sciences does not tolerate sexual discrimination, harassment, or violence in any form. To this end, the university has adopted a policy (internal document) on this matter, which you can access on the intranet.

The following contact persons are available to anyone at our university who has experienced sexual discrimination, harassment, or even violence, or who wishes to report related grievances or risks:

Every conversation will be treated strictly confidentially, and further steps will be taken only at the request of the person concerned.

The THU is also developing a safety policy to address this issue. A safety policy, for example, defines measures intended to better protect people from sexual harassment, establishes prevention programs, and outlines procedures.

Gender-equitable language

THU recommends using either gender-neutral forms or the gender asterisk. Examples of use and more information can be found in the Manual for gender-neutral language.

Why is gender-inclusive language important?
Language has the potential to discriminate and exclude. At the same time, however, it also offers the opportunity to create visibility and change reality in the long term.

Example: People should choose a career based on their interests. However, if we only ever talk about engineers or technicians, it seems as if only men can pursue these professions. Of course, this is not the case - but for schoolgirls, for example, this can unconsciously have a major influence on whether they can imagine themselves in such professions or rule them out from the outset.

THU wants to use language that does not exclude anyone. It therefore recommends gender-neutral forms and forms with the gender asterisk.

Make sure that you use consistent forms within a document, email or website.
