Procedure
Mechanical engineering - Ulm model
The dual degree program in mechanical engineering based on the Ulm model at Ulm University of Applied Sciences begins every year on September 1 and lasts a total of 4.5 years (9 semesters).
You’ll spend the first half-year at the company, where you’ll begin your apprenticeship. This is followed by a two-semester foundational study period. You’ll then spend a year at the company, complete your apprenticeship, and gain valuable hands-on experience.
As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate. You’ll work on projects in specialized departments and, in your final semester, write your bachelor’s thesis at your company.
Mechanical engineering - in-depth practice
You can begin the Mechanical Engineering program with an in-depth practical focus in either the winter or summer semester. The Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering lasts seven semesters and opens up a wide range of career opportunities based on a comprehensive engineering education.
If you’ve already signed your contract before the start of the semester, you’ll first get to know your company during a short orientation phase lasting two to four weeks. Afterward, your studies will begin directly at the university with your first lectures.
As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate: During lecture and exam periods, you’ll study at THU; during breaks from classes, you’ll gain valuable practical experience at the company. During the foundational phase, which covers all modules through the end of the second semester of the curriculum, you’ll take courses such as mathematics, physics, materials science, manufacturing technology, CAD, design engineering, and manufacturing processes. In the advanced study phase, you can choose from the specializations “Automation and Digitalization,” “Manufacturing,” “Design and Development,” and “General Mechanical Engineering.” You’ll complete your internship semester and your bachelor’s thesis directly at your partner company.
