Work-study programme in Production Management

The dual degree programme in Production Management at Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU) combines technical expertise with business, logistics and digitalisation. If you want to play an active role in shaping production processes and optimising modern manufacturing workflows, this programme offers you the opportunity to combine theory and practice right from the start.

During your studies, you will explore production engineering, business administration and IT, as well as topics such as Industry 4.0 and digital transformation. During the work placements, you will work directly within a company, helping to optimise production processes, analysing material flows or contributing to quality and logistics projects.

The programme can be completed as a dual study programme based on the Ulm model or with an in-depth practical component. The Ulm model also offers you recognised vocational training, for example as an industrial mechanic, mechatronics technician or metalworker specialising in design engineering.

Procedure

Production management - Ulm model

The dual degree program in Production Management based on the Ulm Model at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences begins every year on September 1 and lasts a total of 4.5 years (9 semesters).

You’ll spend the first half-year at the company, where you’ll begin your apprenticeship. This is followed by a two-semester foundational program. You’ll then spend a year at the company, complete your apprenticeship, and gain valuable hands-on experience.

As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate. You’ll collaborate on projects in specialized departments and write your bachelor’s thesis at the company during your final semester.

Production Management - Advanced Practice

The program, which features in-depth practical training in production management, begins in either the winter or summer semester and lasts seven semesters. If you have already signed your contract before the start of the program, you’ll first get to know your company during a brief orientation phase lasting two to four weeks. Afterward, your studies begin immediately at the university with the first lectures.

As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate: During lecture and exam periods, you’ll study at THU; during breaks from classes, you’ll gain valuable practical experience at the company. You’ll also complete your internship semester and your bachelor’s thesis directly at your partner company.
