Foreign languages are an important foundation for both academic study and professional life. The Language Centre (SZ) at Ulm University of Applied Sciences offers a wide range of courses designed to develop and enhance language skills.
During your studies, there are opportunities for work placements or study periods abroad. Regardless of this, foreign languages are a key prerequisite for exchange, communication and professional development. The courses help students to navigate an international environment with confidence and to understand and apply specialist content in other languages.
THU offers a wide range of foreign language courses at various proficiency levels. The Language Center organizes this program, thereby ensuring language instruction throughout the course of study.
All courses and their content are summarized in the current foreign language program. It is available for download as a PDF; a printed version can be obtained from the Language Center’s office (Room A100).

During your Computer Science studies at Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU), you will take several modules offered by our institute.
These modules cover key competencies in languages as well as business and social sciences. They are an integral part of your curriculum and may include mandatory or elective components, depending on your study regulations.
Most foreign language courses take place on a weekly basis. To take part in these courses, you must register via the SELMA online portal.
In addition to registering via SELMA, you can also register for the block courses via sprachenzentrum(at)thu.de.
Study and examination achievements in foreign languages can be recognized or credited upon application.
A DAAD language certificate may be required for a study abroad program. You can find all the important information in the information sheet on the DAAD language certificate.
You can schedule an appointment for the English test through the corresponding Moodle course , “DAAD English Test Appointment Scheduling.”
All THU students automatically receive an official foreign language certificate upon graduation. This certificate documents all successfully completed language courses and passed exams—regardless of whether the ECTS credits were counted toward the degree.
If you need a confirmation in advance—for example, for a job application—the Language Center will issue one upon request. Please contact the office for this purpose.
The English placement test is used to determine the current language level of students at the beginning of their studies. Even if the university entrance qualification can already give an indication of the level of English, participation is mandatory for all students.
Based on the results, students receive a recommendation as to which English courses and levels are appropriate for their further studies.
