Stays abroad for teaching, continuing education, and professional development promote the internationalization of THU and offer employees a wide range of opportunities for professional and personal growth. Faculty members benefit from exchanges with international partner universities, while staff members learn new ways of working, expand their skills, and build international networks. This generates valuable momentum that contributes to the professional and personal development of participants, opens up new perspectives and avenues for growth within the academic departments, and strengthens the university’s international network.

Application Process

Applications should be submitted as early as possible—ideally at least three months before the start of the mobility period—to ensure there is sufficient time for review, approval, and organizational preparations.

1. Research continuing education and training opportunities. Research suitable continuing education, training, or staff mobility programs, and determine which option is appropriate in light of your professional and personal goals as well as your area of work.

2. Coordinate your participation internally. Coordinate your planned mobility with your supervisor or your organizational unit and clarify the terms of your leave of absence for the duration of your stay.

3. Contact the host institution. Contact the host institution to discuss the availability and terms of a teaching, continuing education, or staff mobility program. If the institution is a THU partner university, please involve the THU representatives responsible for the partnership at an early stage and coordinate your contact with them.

4. Submit your application via the MoveON portal. Complete the online application form with the preliminary mobility plan in the MoveON portal. Once your application is received, the International Office will guide you through the remaining steps of the funding process and inform you about the required documents and the next steps.

5. Review and funding decision. The International Office will review your application for eligibility and available funding. Once your application is approved, you will receive further information regarding the funding process and the next steps.

Erasmus+

Through ERASMUS+, faculty and staff at Ulm University of Applied Sciences can gain international experience at European universities and educational institutions. Whether through teaching or continuing education and professional development, the program promotes academic exchange, strengthens international collaboration, and contributes to personal and professional growth.

  • The host institution must hold an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) or be an eligible educational institution in an Erasmus+ program country.
  • The duration of the stay is a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of 60 days.
  • For teaching assignments, a valid Erasmus+ agreement with the host university must be in place.
  • For teaching assignments, a minimum of 8 teaching hours per week must be completed.
  • For a combination of teaching and professional development activities, a minimum of 4 teaching hours per week is required.
  • Preference will be given to first-time applicants during the selection process.

Funding depends on the length of the stay abroad:

  • The first five days of the stay are generally fully funded.
  • Starting on the sixth day of the stay, funding is generally provided for only every other day.
  • Professors and staff members may claim an additional travel day for arrival and departure.

    Example:
For a ten-day stay, days 1 through 5 are fully funded. Of days 6 through 10, days 6, 8, and 10 are covered.

Erasmus+ supports teaching and professional development stays for staff and faculty by providing grants to cover living and travel expenses. The amount of funding depends on the destination country, the duration of the stay, and the distance to the destination. The current funding rates include the following daily allowances and travel expense allowances, as calculated by the Erasmus+ distance calculator.

Through Green Travel, Erasmus+ promotes climate-friendly and sustainable business travel. Staff members who primarily use environmentally friendly modes of transportation, such as trains or buses, may receive additional financial support and, if applicable, additional travel days.

If you have a disability rating of at least 20, you may apply for special funding to cover additional costs incurred while abroad. The application must be submitted no later than three months before the start of the trip.
