Work-study programme in Industrial Engineering

The dual degree programme in Industrial Engineering at Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU) combines technical expertise with business management knowledge and enables you to gain valuable practical experience whilst you study. If you wish to combine technology and business, this programme offers the ideal blend of theory and practice.

During the practical phases, you will work directly within a company and gain insights into various departments. You will assist with the planning and optimisation of production processes, contribute to technical and business projects, or work in purchasing, production, quality management and controlling.

The programme can be completed as a dual study programme based on the Ulm model or with an in-depth practical component. The Ulm model additionally combines the degree programme with recognised vocational training, for example as an industrial mechanic or industrial clerk.

Procedure

Industrial Engineering - Ulm Model

The dual degree program in Industrial Engineering based on the Ulm Model at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences begins every year on September 1 and lasts a total of 4.5 years (9 semesters).

You’ll spend the first half-year at the company, where you’ll begin your apprenticeship. This is followed by a two-semester foundational program covering the basic concepts of engineering and business. You’ll then spend a year at the company, complete your apprenticeship, and gain valuable practical experience.

As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate. You’ll collaborate on projects in specialized departments and write your bachelor’s thesis at the company during your final semester.

Industrial Engineering - Advanced Practice

You can begin the Industrial Engineering program with an in-depth practical component in either the winter or summer semester. This interdisciplinary program lasts seven semesters and combines engineering and business.

If you’ve already signed your contract before the start of the program, you’ll first get to know your company during a short orientation phase lasting two to four weeks. Afterward, your studies will begin directly at the university with the first lectures.

As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate: During lecture and exam periods, you’ll study at THU; during breaks from classes, you’ll gain valuable practical experience at the company. The introductory phase covers fundamental concepts in the fields of engineering and business. Afterward, you’ll choose your areas of specialization. You’ll complete your internship semester and your bachelor’s thesis directly at your partner company.
