Procedure
Mechatronics - Ulm model
The dual degree program in mechatronics based on the Ulm model at Ulm University of Applied Sciences begins every year on September 1 and lasts a total of 4.5 years (9 semesters).
You’ll spend the first half-year at a company, where you’ll begin your apprenticeship—for example, as an industrial mechanic. This is followed by a two-semester foundational program, during which you’ll learn the basics of mathematics, physics, mechanics (including design engineering), and electrical and information technology. You will then spend a year at the company, complete your apprenticeship, and gain valuable practical experience.
As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate. You’ll collaborate on projects in specialized departments and, during your final semester, write your bachelor’s thesis at your partner company.
Mechatronics - Advanced practice
You can start the dual degree program with an in-depth practical focus on mechatronics in either the winter or summer semester. It lasts seven semesters and teaches you how to develop technical solutions that are tailored to the overall system. If you’ve already signed your contract before the start of the program, you’ll first get to know your company during a short orientation phase lasting two to four weeks. Afterward, your studies begin directly at the university with the first lectures.
As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate: During lecture and exam periods, you’ll study at THU; during breaks from classes, you’ll gain valuable practical experience at the company. During the introductory phase, you’ll acquire the fundamentals in mathematics, physics, mechanics (including design engineering), and electrical and information technology. In the advanced phase, you’ll deepen your knowledge through additional required and elective modules, including those in the fields of business, society, and languages. In addition, you’ll choose one of four specialization tracks and take six core modules from that track. This allows you to tailor your degree program to your individual needs and prepare specifically for your career interests. You’ll complete your internship semester and your bachelor’s thesis directly at your partner company.
