Procedure
Vehicle technology - Ulm model
The dual degree program in automotive engineering based on the Ulm model at the Technical University of Ulm begins every year on September 1 and lasts a total of 4.5 years.
For the first half-year, you’ll be at the company, where you’ll begin your apprenticeship—for example, as a metalworker specializing in construction technology or commercial vehicle technology. This is followed by a two-semester foundation program at the University of Ulm. You’ll then spend a year at the company, complete your apprenticeship, and gain valuable hands-on experience.
As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate. You’ll collaborate on projects in specialized departments and write your bachelor’s thesis at the company during your final semester.
Vehicle technology - advanced practice
The program in automotive engineering with an in-depth practical component begins in the summer and winter semesters and lasts 7 semesters. If you have already signed your contract before the start of the program, you’ll first get to know your company during a brief orientation period of two to four weeks. Afterward, your studies begin immediately at the university with the first lectures.
As the program progresses, theoretical and practical phases alternate: During lecture and exam periods, you’ll study at THU; during breaks from classes, you’ll gain valuable practical experience at the company. In the foundational phase, which covers all modules through the end of the second semester of the curriculum, you’ll study subjects such as mathematics, physics, materials science, manufacturing technology, CAD, design engineering, and manufacturing processes. For specialized study, you’ll choose one of three tracks during the advanced study phase. You’ll complete your internship semester and your bachelor’s thesis directly at your partner company.
