Alongside the University Council and the Rectorate, the Senate is the central democratic body and the highest decision-making body at THU. It is responsible for fundamental decisions in the areas of teaching, studies, continuing education and research in order to shape the academic development of the university.
Core tasks of the Senate according to § 19 LHG:
- Structural and development planning: passing resolutions on strategic guidelines and the establishment, amendment or discontinuation of degree programs.
- Legislation: Issuing and amending university statutes (e.g. study and examination regulations, admission and selection statutes).
- Research & Teaching: Passing resolutions on research priorities and quality assurance in teaching.
- Elections: Participation in the election of the full-time members of the Rectorate (Rector and Chancellor) and the election of the Vice Rectors.
- Equal opportunities: Confirmation of the appointment of the Equal Opportunities Officer.
