Can't decide whether to study or do an apprenticeship? Then do both.

The Ulm model combines study and training in one: In just 4.5 years, you will acquire both a Bachelor's degree and a recognized skilled worker qualification.

During your apprenticeship, you will be supervised by experienced instructors in the company and later work on practical engineering projects. During the university phases, you will study in the same way as on a traditional Bachelor's degree course. In addition, vocational school lessons usually take place in block form during the first semesters. After a total of 9 semesters, you will complete your studies with a Bachelor's thesis.

Your advantages

  • 2 degrees in 4.5 years
  • Salary for the entire duration
  • High chances of being hired
  • Vacation entitlement during the practical phases
  • Excellent network among dual-track students

In the Ulm model, the training occupation is usually determined by the cooperating company. It is based both on the chosen course of study and on the training occupations offered by the company. This ensures that studies and practical training are optimally coordinated.

The following apprenticeships are possible as part of the Ulm Model:

  • Electronics technician

  • IT specialist

  • Industrial clerk

  • Industrial mechanic

  • Automotive mechatronics technician

  • Mechatronics technician

  • Metal worker / NFZ technician

  • Metal worker / construction technician

  • Orthopaedic technology mechanic

  • Materials tester

The dual study program based on the Ulm Model at Ulm University of Applied Sciences begins every year on September 1.

You spend the first six months at the company and start your training. This is followed by the two-semester foundation course. You then spend a year at the company, complete your training and gain valuable practical experience.

Theoretical and practical phases alternate throughout the course: You will be at THU during the lecture and examination periods and at the company during the lecture-free periods. You will work on projects in specialist departments and write your Bachelor's thesis at the company in the final semester.

You can find a detailed overview of how the semesters are divided between the company and the university in our brief information on the Ulm model (PDF)
