Internships and Theses

Gain international experience through a required or voluntary internship, a thesis project, or a graduate internship abroad. Possible placement locations include companies, research institutions, or partner universities worldwide.

A stay abroad not only broadens your subject-specific knowledge but also strengthens your language skills and intercultural competence. At the same time, you’ll learn new ways of working and build valuable international contacts for your personal and professional future.

Tip: Find out about suitable opportunities and funding programs early on. We recommend starting your planning about 12 months before your planned stay abroad.

Use various methods to find an internship abroad:

  • Search internship and job boards for suitable opportunities (see links below).
  • Check the websites of companies, universities, research institutions, and organizations that are relevant to your field of study, and apply directly for advertised positions.
  • Talk to your professors and staff members at THU. They often have international contacts and can provide you with valuable information about internship opportunities.
  • Leverage existing contacts from previous work experiences. If you’ve already worked as a student employee or gained professional experience in other ways, ask your employer about opportunities at overseas locations or with international partner companies.

Start your search as early as possible and actively apply to multiple organizations. This will increase your chances of finding a suitable internship position.

If possible, apply to several institutions and find out about the country- and organization-specific requirements for your application materials.

Generally, prepare your application materials in English or in the language of the host country. Depending on the institution, additional documents may be required. Standard application materials typically include:

  • Cover letter (statement of purpose)
  • Resume
  • Transcripts and academic records

Internship abroad with Erasmus+

With Erasmus+, you can receive funding for mandatory internships, voluntary internships, research internships, graduate internships, and the practical component of your thesis while studying abroad.

Erasmus+ supports internships at companies, research institutions, organizations, and universities within the Erasmus+ program area. In addition, limited funding opportunities are available for internships in non-European countries.

Through these experiences, you’ll gain international exposure and strengthen your professional, language, and intercultural skills.

  • Confirmation of an Internship Position
  • Full-time internship in accordance with the Erasmus+ funding requirements
  • Timely application before the start of the internship
  • Compliance with the applicable Erasmus+ funding criteria

Additional conditions apply to graduate internships (e.g., application must be submitted while still enrolled in the program; the internship must be completed within 12 months of graduation).
