Successful PhD on testing methods for smart grids
Falko Ebe has successfully completed his PhD, entitled *Testing Methodology for Smart Grid Systems: A Multi-Stage Approach Applied to Architectures Utilising Smart Metering Infrastructure*, at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.
With his thesis, Falko Ebe has made a contribution to the methodological advancement of the testing and evaluation of smart grids. In his work, Ebe developed a systematic approach that enables smart grid systems to be examined and evaluated in a structured manner across several development and testing stages. The focus is on multi-stage testing, the derivation of suitable metrics from use cases, and the use of statistical methods for the evaluation and comparability of test results.
The thesis addresses a key challenge of the energy transition: smart grids consist of a growing number of digitally networked technical subsystems. Conventional testing approaches reach their limits when results from early laboratory phases can only be transferred to later, more realistic test environments to a limited extent. Ebe addresses this problem with a methodology that does not view test campaigns in isolation, but structures them as a coherent, multi-stage process.
A key finding of this work is that test campaigns can be planned, documented and compared more consistently. The methodology developed helps to select suitable test stages, systematically define relevant metrics and evaluate results using statistical methods in such a way that they can be reliably classified across different test phases. The thesis thus lays the groundwork for identifying development and integration risks at an earlier stage and for structuring testing processes in a more targeted manner.
This research is closely linked to Ulm University of Applied Sciences. Ebe completed his studies there and subsequently worked as a member of the Smart Grids research group. In this context, he contributed to several research and development projects and played a key role in establishing and further developing the Smart Grid Laboratory. This laboratory formed an important basis for the issues addressed in the thesis concerning the phased testing of complex smart grid systems.
Falko Ebe now works at TransnetBW GmbH, where he is involved in the MSHIP programme, focusing on the next generation of grid control systems.
The doctoral thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr Guus Pemen (Eindhoven University of Technology), Prof. Gerd Heilscher (Ulm University of Applied Sciences) and Prof. Dr Phuong Nguyen (Eindhoven University of Technology).
“The energy transition is giving rise to increasingly complex and highly interconnected systems. To ensure these function reliably, we must not only develop them well, but also test them systematically. My work aims to help make testing processes more structured, comparable and efficient,” says Falko Ebe, summarising the benefits of his research.
