Successful PhD on innovative noise reduction in shipbuilding

Dr Matthias Donderer has successfully defended his doctoral thesis, entitled “Reducing Engine-Induced Ship Noise at Source”, at the Technical University of Hamburg. In his thesis, he focuses on reducing engine-induced structure-borne noise on ships in order to minimise the negative impact on the marine environment. On behalf of the THU, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jochen Neher supervised the thesis as an external examiner.

By employing multi-body simulations with elastic bodies and transfer functions, Dr Donderer improves existing methods for predicting sound transmission. The thesis thus makes an important contribution to the further development of shipbuilding and the protection of marine mammals.
