New orientation semester at Ulm University of Applied Sciences makes it easier for women to start studying engineering
With ‘Technik +O’, Ulm University of Applied Sciences is launching a new orientation semester exclusively for women in the 2026/27 winter term. This preparatory programme precedes a standard Bachelor’s degree and enables participants to explore STEM subjects without uncertainty or the pressure to adapt – before they make a binding decision on their course of study. As well as providing subject-specific guidance, the programme focuses on mutual support: networks are formed, self-confidence grows – and new perspectives become a reality.
A safe space for development and networking
The programme is aimed at women who are interested in technology but do not yet know whether, or where, they see their place in this field. Women remain under-represented, particularly in STEM subjects – that is, science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
“It is certainly not down to a lack of ability on the part of young women. Studies show that women are just as capable as men. Many are interested in maths or physics at school, for example, but there is often a lack of role models, meaning that most do not even consider the idea of becoming an engineer.
This is exactly where our orientation semester comes in: it offers the chance to try things out without the pressure of having to make a decision – and in doing so, to build self-confidence and explore new prospects,” says Prof. Dr Barbara Streppel, project lead for “Technik +O”.
Experiencing technology, developing prospects
During the orientation semester, participants attend regular lectures in fundamental science subjects such as mathematics and physics. The programme is complemented by optional modules, orientation sessions and insights into various technical degree programmes. By the end of the semester, participants not only know what to expect from engineering degree programmes – but also which one suits them personally. Following the orientation semester, students can enrol as normal in any degree programme at THU. Whether the ECTS credits are recognised depends on the chosen degree programme.
Concrete prospects for the start of your degree
As well as providing guidance, ‘Technik +O’ also offers clear benefits for students’ future academic paths:
- Earning up to 30 ECTS credits, which may be recognised depending on the subsequent choice of degree programme
- A guaranteed place on one of the numerous STEM degree programmes at THU
- Building a strong network with other participants and establishing contacts in the professional world
- Choosing the perfect degree programme is also supported by professional coaching. Application and start
The programme will launch for the first time in the 2026/27 winter semester and will initially offer around 30 places. Applications can be submitted from the end of April 2026 via Ulm University of Technology.
