Research and teaching priorities

Alfred M. Franz has been Professor of Medical Informatics at Ulm University of Technology since 2017. Prior to this, he was a researcher and deputy head of the research group in the Department of Computer-Assisted Medical Interventions at the German Cancer Research Centre (Heidelberg). He has published numerous scientific papers and has served on the programme committees of the prestigious international conferences International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) and International Conference on Information Processing in Computer-Assisted Interventions (IPCAI). He is a reviewer for several scientific journals, such as *Medical Physics* and the *International Journal of Computer-Assisted Radiology and Surgery*. Prof. Franz is particularly committed to actively involving students in the scientific community, for example through joint participation in specialist conferences (example on LinkedIn).

At Ulm University of Technology, Prof. Franz teaches programming, algorithms and data structures, as well as computer graphics, on Bachelor’s degree programmes. He also conducts research alongside students in the field of navigated medical interventions, which is also the subject of his Master’s lecture. His laboratory carries out projects on the localisation of medical instruments (tracking), ultrasound imaging and augmented reality for medical interventions.

At the THU, Prof. Franz leads several research projects focusing on technology in healthcare and medicine. In the research area of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Systems and e-Health, students from the Bachelor’s degree programmes in Medical Informatics, Data Science in Medicine, Informatics or Computer ScienceHealthcare Information Management and Medical Technology, as well as from the Master’s programmes in Intelligent Systems and Medical Devices – Research and Development, can participate in research projects. In addition, outstanding Master’s graduates have the opportunity to pursue a PhD in collaboration with a university. Interested students are welcome to contact Prof. Franz at any time regarding potential topics for final-year dissertations and project work within the framework of the research projects.
