About me

Professor of Building and Energy Technology at the Institute for Energy Technology and Energy Economics (IEE)

Florian Klumpp has been Professor of Building Energy Technology at Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU) since March 2024 and is a member of the Institute of Energy Technology and Energy Economics. Prior to this, he worked at the planning and consultancy firm Fichtner from 2013 as a project manager for energy technology and energy economics, and from 2021 as managing director of the subsidiary Fichtner Australia. Before that, Mr Klumpp spent seven years working for the energy supplier EnBW.

His work to date has focused, amongst other things, on energy supply concepts for buildings and neighbourhoods; conceptual design, feasibility, market, potential and strategy studies; the technical and economic optimisation of energy systems; and the modelling of energy markets. 

Mr Klumpp developed the ‘H2-Optimizer’ optimisation tool and has used it in numerous industrial projects for the modelling, technical design and optimisation, as well as the economic evaluation, of complex hydrogen systems. 

His core areas of expertise include building energy technology, hydrogen technologies, plant design and optimisation, sector coupling, renewable energies and energy storage technologies.

The LAGER project (“Long-term storage in energy-flexible, sector-integrated properties and neighbourhoods”) is a research and demonstration project run by Ulm University of Applied Sciences. It will run for three years and has a total budget of around 2.9 million euros.  The aim is to drive forward the cross-sectoral flexibilisation of the energy system and to investigate the integration of the electricity, heating and mobility sectors in energy-flexible properties. 

A key component is the development and testing of a long-term hydrogen storage system with a capacity of 50 MWh (approx. 1,500 kg), which enables seasonal energy storage. The project also involves setting up an electrolysis system for hydrogen production, extracting heat from the existing hydrogen-fired gas turbine, and integrating these systems into the existing infrastructure of the THU Energy Park. 

The project is being carried out by the Institute of Energy Technology and Energy Economics (IEE) under the leadership of Prof. Dr Dietmar Graeber and Prof. Dr-Ing Florian Klumpp.
