About me

Professor of Digitalisation and AI in Manufacturing and Logistics

As a professor of digitalisation and AI, I teach courses on these subjects within the engineering and industrial engineering degree programmes at the Faculty of Production Engineering and Production Management. The spectrum ranges from an introduction to computer science with Python programming in the first semester to a module on methods and applications of artificial intelligence at Master’s level. 

Dean of Studies for the Food Technology (LET) programme: 

As Dean of Studies, I am responsible for the launch and administrative management of the new LET degree programme, from liaising with schools and attending trade fairs, through to organising the programme, providing academic guidance, chairing the Programme Committee and the Advisory Board, right through to successful accreditation in accordance with the THU’s quality assurance system. 

Member of the Institute for Business Organisation and Logistics (IBL) at the THU

As a member of the IBL Institute, I work with my colleagues to drive forward the development of the THU’s ‘learning factory’, where many principles of modern digitalisation in production and intralogistics, as well as applications of AI, are tested, demonstrated and incorporated into teaching. 

  • 1986–1990: Studied mathematics and worked as a computer operator at a computer centre, FSU Jena and TU Dresden
  • 1990–1994: Studied Computer Science, specialising in Artificial Intelligence, at the Technical University of Berlin
  • 1994–1997 PhD, Daimler Research Berlin in collaboration with TU Berlin; solving a production planning problem using AI methods
  • 1997–1999 Research assistant, Daimler Research Berlin; projects on the control of flexible manufacturing systems: KoWest, MASCADA (EU)
  • 2000–2004 Head of the Supply Chain Management Division, Daimler Research, conducting research, providing consultancy and facilitating technology transfer. Projects: SNS, ILIPT (EU)
  • 2004–2006 Consultant on flexible workflow automation, Mercedes-Benz Passenger Car Development
  • 2006 – 2021 Professor of Logistics and SCM, Ulm University of Applied Sciences (formerly Ulm University of Applied Sciences, Ulm University)
    • 2017–2018 Research semester at Infineon Technologies, Munich, Supply Chain Innovations Department: Semantic Web for SCM
