short & sweet

The Computer Science - International Program combines modern methods of software development with the design of processor-supported hardware. In particular, aspects of modeling complex technical systems and model-driven software and system development are taken into account.

  • One course, two degrees: In addition to the degree from THU, you will receive a degree from an American university after successfully completing your year abroad in the USA.
  • International: From the third year onwards, you will take English-language courses and prepare yourself optimally for the international year of study.
  • Top job prospects: On the course, you will learn to develop complex software systems, design processor-based hardware and apply modern methods of model-driven software and system development. The focus is on topics such as system modeling, software engineering and innovative IT solutions. This opens the door to a career in research, development, IT project management or consulting.

Computer Science study contents

The Bachelor’s program in Computer Science – International Program lasts eight semesters and provides you with a solid foundation in mathematical principles and core computer science subjects. During the first two years, you will study alongside your peers from the Computer Science program. In the third year, students from the U.S. join the program. Courses are then held in English for all students. In the fourth year, you will transfer to the partner university in the U.S. to complete your degree. Upon successful completion, this program awards you the academic degree of Bachelor of Science. The curriculum is divided into training in mathematics and natural sciences, training in computer science subjects, subjects from the economic and social sciences, as well as elective courses.

The following specializations are available:

  • Artificial Intelligence & Data Science
  • Service Robotics, IT Security
  • Mobile Computing
  • Computer Graphics & Vision
  • Medical Information Systems
  • Business Administration

Through its English-language courses in the third and fourth years of study, as well as the curricular and academic integration of the two campuses, the ICS program is specifically designed to cultivate a skill set and graduate profile geared toward an international professional environment. In terms of content, the program is closely modeled after the national undergraduate program in Computer Science at the University of Ulm and the Computer Science program at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The program aims for similar qualification goals as these programs, with a particular emphasis on internationalization.

The main objectives of the ICS Bachelor’s program can be summarized as follows:

  • You will receive practical and application-oriented training based on mathematics, natural sciences, business administration, and computer science, and will be equipped to work independently in professions within the field of computer science.
  • During your studies, you will acquire knowledge and skills in the areas of mathematical, scientific, and business fundamentals, theoretical and applied computer science, and specialized topics in computer science built upon these foundations, such as real-time systems.
  • The knowledge and skills mentioned above will enable you to use computer science methods to design, model, and implement complex, computer-based information processing systems in a wide variety of application domains, including those outside your field of study. You will acquire social and personal skills for working in international and interdisciplinary environments.
  • Upon earning your Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree, you will be fully qualified to take on research, development, project management, and project leadership roles, as well as service and consulting positions in the IT industry and its diverse application domains within an international context.

Requirements for your Computer Science Bachelor

To study Computer Science - International Program, you need a university entrance qualification, for example the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), the subject-specific higher education entrance qualification, the entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or a comparable qualification. Previous experience is not required. As courses and examinations from the 5th to the 8th semester are held entirely in English, you should have a very good command of English. You will also take part in an aptitude test. In particular, your mathematical skills, analytical and logical thinking as well as your English language skills will be tested. An interest in computers, technical understanding, motivation and commitment are also important for the course.

Conclusion & prospects

With the successful completion of your Computer Science Bachelor's degree, you will receive a Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) and a double certificate from Ulm University of Applied Sciences and the American partner university Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. This also qualifies you for an international career in computer science and the IT sector. After graduating, you will have a wide range of career prospects in research and development, project management and project leadership as well as in service and consulting activities within the IT industry. You will typically find employment with IT service providers and companies in the data processing and computer technology sectors.
