Large-scale research facilities centre inaugurated at the THU
New prospects for research, development and collaboration with industry and academia
On 23 July 2026, around 70 guests gathered at the THU to celebrate the inauguration of the new large-scale research facility for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and computed tomography (CT). Among the guests were numerous external research partners and representatives from industry. With the commissioning of the new microfocus CT and the expanded facilities in the field of light and scanning electron microscopy, the THU is opening up new possibilities for structural and materials analysis as well as dimensional metrology.
Following a welcome address by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Häger and remarks from the Rector’s Office, Simone Schneider, Head of Finance & Service, and Frank Vogler, Head of Product & Application Sales Specialists, from the management team of Carl Zeiss Microscopy Deutschland GmbH, provided insights into the ZEISS portfolio in the field of metrology and microscopy. Under the title ‘Focus on Innovative Quality: ZEISS Solutions for Teaching, Research and Industry’, they presented current solutions and highlighted the long-standing close ties between ZEISS and the THU, as well as shared prospects for the future.
“Our close collaboration with ZEISS has been in place for many years and offers numerous opportunities for the future as well,” emphasised Prof. Dr Hubert Mantz, Scientific Director of the Large-Scale Research Equipment Centre. “With the new centre, we are creating an excellent foundation for further developing existing collaborations and initiating new joint activities.”
Prof. Dr Hubert Mantz and Prof. Dr-Ing Andreas Häger then presented ongoing and planned research and development projects using the new large-scale instruments under the title “We’ve got a clear view of research!”. The focus was on the potential of scanning electron microscopy and computed tomography for current and future research questions.
A particular highlight of the evening was the personal exchange and the subsequent technical discussions at the Large-Scale Research Equipment Centre. During the tour of the facilities, guests were able to familiarise themselves with the new equipment and discuss specific potential applications. This gave rise to numerous ideas and points of contact for joint research and development projects.
“The subsequent conversations and discussions were very promising. I am certain that we can build on this in many areas,” said Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Häger. “It is precisely this direct exchange with our research partners and companies that demonstrates the potential inherent in the joint use and further development of these technologies.”
With the Large-Scale Research Equipment Centre for Scanning Electron Microscopy and Computed Tomography, the THU is strengthening its research infrastructure and creating new opportunities for collaboration at the interface between science, industry and applied research.
