“German Universities Ulm Campus” established
Egyptian partner universities are getting involved in the Science Park
The German University in Cairo and the German International University are opening a campus on the Oberer Eselsberg and expanding their collaboration with the University of Ulm and Ulm University of Applied Sciences. The aim is to deepen academic cooperation and provide mutual support. Representatives from all four institutions have signed a corresponding agreement at Ulm Town Hall.
The German University in Cairo (GUC), of which the University of Ulm was a founding partner, was established by Professor Ashraf Mansour, a physicist who once completed his PhD and habilitation in Ulm and who, as Chair of the University Council, continues to steer its course to this day. With this new presence in Ulm Science Park, Mansour aims to ensure the long-term future of this project close to his heart. The GUC is establishing the ‘German Universities Ulm Campus’ in collaboration with the German International University (GIU), which was founded in 2019, is based in Egypt’s New Capital, and whose founding partner is the Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU).
The Ulm site is intended to strengthen existing partnerships with universities in the region and expand collaboration with businesses, associations, the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm, and the state of Baden-Württemberg. The location within the Science Park is expected to facilitate joint activities thanks to its proximity. Furthermore, the collaboration is intended to promote the mobility of students and teaching staff, foster bilateral research and, in the long term, also enable dual degrees.
The parties involved signed the memorandum of understanding on 27 July in the presence of Ulm’s Lord Mayor, Martin Ansbacher. “I am delighted that the joint campus in Ulm is going ahead and I hope it will be a great success,” said the Lord Mayor, who welcomed a large delegation from Egypt, including many students, to the town hall. Professor Mansour was also delighted: “Today marks a major milestone for the cooperation with the University of Ulm, the THU and the State of Baden-Württemberg.” “As
a founding partner of the German University in Cairo, the University of Ulm is particularly keen to continue this success story with the new campus in the Science Park. This collaboration opens up new prospects for our students and researchers and strengthens our university’s international focus,” says University President Professor Michael Weber. “In this way, we are making an important contribution to the training of highly qualified specialists whom our region urgently needs and who are, at the same time, ideally prepared for international careers.”
“As a founding institution of the GIU, we are delighted to now be further expanding our long-standing and successful partnership in Ulm,” says Professor Volker Reuter, Rector of the THU. “The German Universities Ulm Campus creates new opportunities for the exchange of students and researchers, as well as for joint projects with the worlds of science, business and society. In doing so, we are strengthening both our university’s international networks and Ulm’s position as a centre for science and innovation.”
About the German University in Cairo
The German University in Cairo is a non-profit private university and was founded in 2002 on the initiative of Professor Ashraf Mansour. Today, around 10,000 young people study there across 71 degree programmes accredited in Germany.
About the German International University
Founded in 2019, the German International University is headquartered in Egypt’s New Capital. The bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes are based on German curricula, regulations and standards. The practice-oriented education is designed to strengthen academic, technical, economic and cultural cooperation with Germany and other international partners.
