Farewell to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Werner Schweizer

It is with great sadness that the Faculty of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering at Ulm University of Applied Sciences bids farewell to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Werner Schweizer.

For many years, he was a leading figure at our university and his work had a particularly significant impact on teaching and academic life. In particular, his active involvement across the university in various roles and committees – including as Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering – is worthy of special mention. 

In accordance with the Bologna Process, he played a key role in shaping the transition from diploma programmes to the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree system at our university, particularly in the development and introduction of the Master’s programme in Systems Engineering and Management.

With great dedication, the highest level of professional expertise and tireless commitment, he championed the interests of our faculty and its students. The individual support and encouragement of students with special needs and those facing social disadvantages were particularly close to his heart. Prof. Schweizer also left a lasting mark through the merger of the departments of Automotive Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, which shaped the character of today’s faculty. 

In his teaching, he placed particular emphasis on imparting knowledge through hands-on experience in laboratory settings. This practical focus was also a key principle behind the introduction of the dual study programme based on the Ulm model, for the development and successful establishment of which he was largely responsible.

He was also a highly respected, valued and reliable colleague within the academic staff. With the passing of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Werner Schweizer, the university has lost a respected and accomplished academic as well as a remarkable individual. We shall remember his work with gratitude!
