Prof. Dr Dietmar Graeber has been Professor of Energy Economics at Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU) since 2017. He is a member of the Executive Board of the Institute of Energy Technology and Energy Economics (IEE) at the THU and heads the Smart Grids Research Group (SGFG) as well as the Transfer Centre for Energy Economics. He teaches energy economics on both Master’s and Bachelor’s degree programmes and is the Dean of Studies for the Energy Economics (B.Sc.) programme at THU. His research focuses on the application of quantitative methods to energy market-related issues – in particular distributed flexibility and sector integration. He is the spokesperson or coordinator for several national and international research projects in this field. Together with partners such as ENTSO-E, he is actively involved in the development of European energy markets. He is a board member of the Smart Grids Platform Baden-Württemberg e.V. and a member of the ‘Centre for Energy Research and Technology’, the ‘Centre for Digitalisation, Analytics and Data Science Ulm’ and the HAW’s doctoral centre in Baden-Württemberg.
He completed his studies in economics at the University of Hohenheim and Kyushu University (Japan) in 2007 and was awarded his PhD by the University of Hohenheim in 2013. Prior to his appointment at the THU, he held various positions at EnBW AG and TransnetBW GmbH for more than 10 years. At TransnetBW, he played a key role in establishing the trading of electricity from renewable energy sources and was actively involved in the development of European market coupling and the founding of CASC (now JAO). At EnBW, he led various major energy sector projects – including some commissioned directly by EnBW’s divisional and executive boards. In recent years, he has founded several start-ups.
